Looking for private tuition?

As of 2025, I am offering online private tuition in Old English, Middle English, Old Norse, and beginners' modern Icelandic.

I've been teaching these languages from undergraduate to doctoral level throughout the last twenty years: my experience ranges from welcoming complete beginners, with no previous experience of language-learning and no familiarity with grammatical terminology, to providing advanced training to research students working at the cutting edge of Germanic historical linguistics. As a lifelong language-learner myself I know what it's like to find your feet with new languages and new teachers, and I'm always keen to adapt my approach to the needs to my students, meeting you wherever you are at to increase your confidence and help you reach new levels.

My usual rate is £45 GBP per hour for individual tuition, but I am willing to discuss pricing as part of a general assessment of your needs as a learner. Mostly my tutees choose to meet for an hour once or twice per week, sometimes with a specific number of classes or learning goal in mind, sometimes just to see where studying the language takes them: I'm happy to discuss what suits you!

I've made many of my teaching resources available for free over the years. You'll see that I've paid more attention to content and communication than to technological sophistication, but I think they'll give you a good sense of what I'm like to work with.
